Basically you want to discuss topics of interest with other members and network together.

If there is someone who seems to be somewhat knowledgeable about a  particular subject of interest

and they consistently are just posting great, high quality and valuable content as sort of a contribution to the community at large,

most of the time people will want to get to know more about that member and check out their signature to follow it back to see what else they can find on their web site.

After all, it's a pretty decent indication that they have some good information and services/products available at their web site if they are offering quality information in the forum.

That's where a lot of your visitors will come from as you are building quality relationships with other members who share your areas of interest.

A lot of times it just kind of happens naturally and it's a good idea to find out from participating in the forums

what members are most interested in and what they are talking about.

That way you can kind of see how best to help them.

It's a lot easier to help someone get to where they are already wanting to go than it is to offer them something they may not even know exists yet.

So the community aspect and relationship building is good with forums.

Maybe you have a newsletter that covers new and exciting information relevant to the topics of discussion in a particular forum.

Contributing good, quality content over time will build you a solid reputation as someone who is knowledgeable in your field and people will want to subscribe to your newsletter so they can see what else you may have to offer.

Forum marketing is basically more of a relationship building technique more than a SEO tactic.  To be successful in forum marketing, you need to have patience, expertise and you need to contribute to the community.  Remember that forums are more or less a great way of getting prospects and expanding your network.

However, forum marketing is a very good way to increase your rankings in search engines.  Not only that, it's organic and white-hat.  No tricks here.
