Do any of the members here have tips toward getting a new forum started up and active? It seems pretty difficult to start getting the initial traffic in and staying so that a true community actually kicks off.

Anyone have a lot of success with their new forums?

Search engines are valuable to new forums.  How do you get high rankings in search engines?  CONTENT. Smiley   You must have quality content on your forums so that you would be indexed according to the key words you want.

Also, from a user's point of view, a forum must be easily navigable.  No sense in getting the user lost.  While most forums use forum softwares like this one, there are some that presents a maze-like forum that requires a user to get to know the ins and outs of the forum before being able to post.  These forums will have a hard time succeeding.

Good luck with your forum. I guess now you start gaining more traffic and members, right? I think the first step of building a forum is getting loyal and active members which will be the "core" members of your forum.
