I always had the dilemma that whether we should write the content on our site or go for press release.

Having the content help in Google and having the press release can jump your traffic to an extent.

Why not write a press release, then post it to your site as well?

Yes, it's not really a case of either/or, but you really want to have something newsworthy to justify the release.

Is there something unique or buzz worthy that the press would like to publish and that people should know about?

It could be something simple like a new officer at a company or even a special event with prizes and contests.

If you have a content that is worth posted, and which the people have to know, then  you can do pres release. Any thing regarding your company/website which is worth publishing can be used for PRs.
