Not that I want to appear dumb when I just got here....  Cheesy but I honestly haven't the faintest idea what a torrent is.

If anyone has time to explain it to me and why it's a good thing in simple terms, I'd be very grateful! I've heard the word bandied about more and more in recent months but I'm clueless. I really would like to make the most of being here but can't do that if I don't have a grasp on the terminology.

Anyway, my mother always told me there's no such thing as a dumb question.  Grin Thanks in advance!

The Wikipedia link will definitely help. Torrents are pretty much the norm for any larger download these days because they function off software that allows download from multiple sources at once.

Torrent is a sort of Peer to peer transfer network. It is mainly used for heavy downloads.

Users create torrents associated with the main files. These torrent file actually contain the directory and file structure of the download data. It just weighs few kilobytes.

There are many torent sites who host these torrent files. Users usually download torrent files from these sites and download the main file using a torrent client software, from the peer. Every one who downloads these files will start uploading the content.

As this process goes on.. ultimately, numerous number of peers upload the content, so that download would become very fast.

Hmm, Torrents is like bobwilson basiclaly said its a Huge transfer network, that works like peer to peer, but most people just use it for big downloads, such as: Movies, Series of programs,Documentaries, and so on..

There are some good well known Softwares in which you can download: Utorrent,Vuze,Handbrake, and much more..

I personally use Utorrent,it downloads fast.If you wanna try it here is a link: http://www.utorrent.com/
